Gariep Dam – A Town on the Northern Bank of the Orange River

We arrived late the evening at our accommodation at Gariep Dam and ordered delicious food which was delivered to our doorstep by the owner of a local restaurant. The next morning we started to explore this beautiful town located on the Northern bank of the Orange river. This town was the original dam-building community who did not want to leave after the dam was completed. So that is how it came to be. The view of the village from the top of the hill was breathtaking, not to mention the size of the dam, which is the largest in South Africa.

Gariep Dam

On 15 Feb 2017, I visited the Gariep Dam, South Africa's largest water reservoir. At the time it was at 61% of capacity, but by the time of publishing a week later it was already at 73%.
